Getting from Goa to Mumbai

Mumbai , formerly known as Bombay, is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India. Mumbai is located on the west coast of India and is the richest city of the country. It is the commercial and entertainment capital of India and also houses India’s Hindi (Bollywood) and Marathi film and television industry.

Goa ,a former Portuguese colony, comprises a unique mix of Portuguese culture and architecture. Today is a major tourism hub in the country and also one of India’s most charming “cities”.

Quick summary

With no railway between Goa and Mumbai, you other overland option is the bus, which is also the cheapest way to travel. But the travel time is about 12 hours. If you are in a hurry, then the plane is the fast (and more expensive) option.

Flights from Goa (airport code: GOI) to Mumbai


Dabolim Airport (GOI)
is the only airport serving the state of Goa . It is located in Vasco da Gama and handles both domestic and international flights.

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM) serves Mumbai and is India’s busiest airport. It is also one of the main gateways into the country, with connecting flights to New York, London , Dubai and Singapore. It is located 28 km from downtown and is hub for the following airlines: Air India, Blue Dart Aviation, Deccan360, GoAir, IndiGo, Jet Airways, JetLite, Kingfisher Airlines and SpiceJet.

Flights between Goa and Mumbai are operated by: Air India, GoAir, IndiGo, Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines and SpiceJet. The flight time is 1h. Regardless of when you fly in 2012, expect to pay from Rs 2609 / US$49 one way on Air India, Kingfisher Airlines or Jet Airways. Return flights start at Rs 4738 / US$89 on Kingfisher Airlines.

Buses from Goa to Mumbai

You can travel from Goa to Mumbai by bus. There are about 16 buses per day from Goa, all leaving in the afternoon (between 5 p.m.. and 9:15 p.m.). These are operated by 4 different bus companies. The travel time is about 12 hours and the fares start at Rs 350 / US$7 one way, if you choose a seat in a bus with no AC. If you prefer a bus with AC then the fare is Rs 900 / US$17 one way.

On the way back, the buses from Mumbai also depart in the afternoon and night. The travel time is about 12 hour and the fares start at Rs 300 / US$6 one way (normal seat, no AC). If you choose a sleeper in an AC bus, the fare is Rs 800 / US$15 one way. There are about 30 departures per day from Mumbai.

Driving from Goa to Mumbai

If you are brave enough to decide to drive in India, you can rent a car in Goa and drive the 600 km to Mumbai on NH 4. You should be able to cover the distance in 9 ½ h. But, do plan some stops along the way.

Another option is NH 17 which runs closer to the coast. The distance is 577 km but the travel time is 11h.
