Australian High Commission in India
The Australian High Commission in New Delhi and the Australian Consulates General in Mumbai and Chennai are meant to provide assistance to the Australian citizens visiting India or living here.
However, Australian citizens should be aware that an Australian overseas mission can provide a very basic safety net for travelers in difficulty and that once they are in a foreign country, they become subject to its laws and are legally accountable for the acts they commit.
If you happen to be in difficulty when visiting India, you should seek the assistance of the Australian High Commission. Here is a list of what they can do to help:
- issue emergency passports (or other travel documents)
- provide assistance in case an Australian citizen falls ill, dies, or is in an accident
- provide a list of lawyers and doctors
- provide limited financial assistance
- help during emergencies, such as natural disasters
- visit you in jail if arrested and inform the family back home (only on request)
You should be aware that any hotel, medical, or any other bills are paid by you (or your insurance, if applicable).
